Be Careful Who You Talk To

Have you ever been told, “Be careful who you share your personal business with…everyone is not your friend?”

I know I have been told this growing up by my mother and grandmother. Even with their words of wisdom and that nudge deep from within that would let me know when someone didn’t have my best interests at heart, which was God there the whole time, I still found myself sharing too much with the wrong people. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t pick these people off the streets. They were a family member, friend, and church member…I trusted them off their title — the role they represented in my life — and not off their character. Big mistake.
Needless to say, I had to learn the hard way — just because someone is in church on Sunday worshipping, doesn’t mean that is the person you should share your personal affairs with. We are all in different places in our lives where God is working to transform us in the likeness of His Son. The transformation process is much easier when we surrender to the Holy Spirt and deny the flesh daily (Matt. 16:24; Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23), but for those who choose not to do so, it’s easier to be led by the flesh. The flesh wants to gossip, the flesh says it’s OK to share someone else’s business, but dare you to share theirs, and the flesh feels justified in breaking covenants.
Some people have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior, but have not made Him Lord over their life; they are not being led by God’s Holy Spirit. They want to be saved so they do not spend an eternity apart from God, but they are not truly interested in living the Christian life on earth. We have to use godly wisdom when sharing our dreams, visions, ambitions, problems, and goals with others.
Take everything to God first in prayer before we start divulging it to others. There are times when we will need intercessors to pray with us, God didn’t intend for us to be alone on earth, BUT let Him guide you to the right person. God sees the heart of man. Proverbs 16:2 People may be pure in their own eyes, but the LORD examines their motives. Gods knows everything. There is nothing that can get by Him. He knows who wants to hurt you and who has your best interests at heart.
In the Book of Judges, Samson was a judge who led Israel for 20 years in the days of the Philistines (Judges 15). The Philistines were a group of people who continuously tried to suppress the Israelites, God’s chosen people. During that time, Samson defeated the Philistines, who had ruled over the Israelites, as part of God’s plan. However, the Philistines did not forget. Later, they enticed a women named Delilah (Judges 16), who Samson had fallen in love with, to find out what made him so strong.
Samson told Delilah on two different occasions a false reason for his great strength and how he could be tied up and subdued. What got my attention is after Samson told Delilah, the Philistines attempted to subdue him in the manner he had stated…clear sign that she could not be trusted. Before you judge Samson, how many of us have done this? It’s evident that a person cannot be trusted, but we ignore the signs and let the person back in anyways. This is why I love the Bible, because it’s so real! The same scenarios that are happening today has already happened in the Bible, which God has made available to help us in every situation in our lives.
Delilah came back a third time begging Samson to tell her the truth, which he did and the Philistine’s were able to take him captive with Delilah’s help — the one he thought he could trust. Now, you’re probably wondering why he would tell her this information. But haven’t you been in love before and shared your deepest secrets with your significant other? If you have not read Samson’s story, I recommend that you read it. It truly details the mighty strength we have in us through the power of the Holy Spirit today.
Though it might sound like the enemy won when the Philistines captured Samson, God is so faithful. The enemy is always defeated. God helped Samson defeat the Philistines at the end and he was able to accomplish more in his death then he did when he was alive (Judges 16:30).
Today, we have a greater promise through Jesus Christ. He is our strength and He will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). He truly knows what’s best for all of us and reminds us in Matthew 7:6″Don’t waste what is holy on people who are unholy. Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you.” What is precious to you should not be given to people who aren’t appreciative and do not love you. I shared a matter close to me once with an extended family member and the person chose to betray my trust. This was a life lesson that I will never repeat. But just like Samson, God showed up in my situation and He will do the same for you. God has the final say.
In closing, I want to leave you with this message. My son and I were having a general conversation this week about who to trust in his circle. He asked if we can trust family. My response was, “I trust Jesus.” He asked again. I gave him the same response. When he asked the third time, I said, “You trust a person because they are trustworthy, and not because of the title they hold in your life.”
